AVALANCHE LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATION
Description: Our Level 1 Avalanche Training provides comprehensive education in avalanche safety, equipping participants with the skills to identify avalanche terrain, assess hazards, and make informed decisions in the backcountry. The course covers essential topics such as avalanche dynamics, snowpack evaluation, route planning, and rescue techniques, combining classroom learning with hands-on field training. Designed for outdoor enthusiasts and backcountry travelers, this certification lays the foundation for safe and responsible winter recreation in avalanche-prone areas.
Length: This Course is Taught over Four Parts
Part 1 - Two Hour (Classroom In Person or Virtual Training)
Part 2 - Day in the Field Training
You will learn about:
- Types of avalanches, terrain, snowpack and weather factors
- Effective group communication
- Accessing and reading local avalanche reports
- Trailhead equipment checks
- Route selection
- Travel techniques
- Avalanche evaluation processes
- Decision making
- Beacon rescue
- What to do if caught yourself
- Single and multiple victim rescues
Part 3 - Two Hour (Classroom In Person or Virtual Training)
Part 4 - Day in the Field Training
- Part 3 and 4 are designed to build upon the training above and goes into greater depth about snow covers snowpack evaluation, rescue skills review, in avalanche hazard evaluation process.
- Use what you have learned to help plan a tour using all information gathered prior.
- Recognizing avalanche terrain in the field and during classroom route-finding exercises
- Select terrain and route appropriate for current avalanche conditions.
- Learn the basics of mountain snowpack formation in greater detail including observations of the snowpack.
- Learn to perform and interpret multiple types of snowpack stability tests.
